Introduction

Grimgalad is a city-state that has withstood the test of time, known for its military prowess and strategic trade routes. It serves as a key player in the political and economic landscape of Eldrahn.

Geography

Located at the base of the Iron Mountains along their Southern Slopes and at the crossroads of major trade routes, Grimgalad is surrounded by rugged terrain and imposing cliffs, with the Svarta-Vidhr blossoming from its southern gates, providing natural defenses against invaders. The city itself is built on a series of flattened mountaintops, offering a commanding view of the surrounding lands.

The Geomancers' Season-Locking Etheric Weave:

The ancient Geomancers of Grimgalad were Dwarven masters of the Ether who blended their intricate stone craft with an arcane understanding of the natural world. Their season-fixing influence is a high-level enchantment that manipulates the local etherics, altering the elemental characteristics of the area to sustain a specific climate—perpetual autumn, in the case of Grimgalad.

This enchantment functions through a network of potent runes, each serving as a nexus for geomantic energy. The runes are connected in an etheric grid that synergizes to create a harmonic field. It bends the elemental balance within the geomantic sphere to maintain the desired seasonal state. The network operates much like a self-sustaining power grid, employing the ambient magical energies to constantly renew the enchantments.

At the basis of this widespread effect is a collection of keystone runic complexes—massive, deeply-enchanted stones buried at critical points around the city's perimeter. They serve as the main conductors of geomantic energies, radiating their influence outward and knitting the edge of the sphere where the magical and natural climates converge and coalesce.

Regarding the creation of localized runic fields with this season-fixing enchantment, it's theoretically possible. The Geomancers likely could construct smaller, independent grids of runes to create 1–5-mile diameter fields. These miniature versions would entail a centralized runic stone or a focused cluster of geomantic symbols, which would define and maintain the climate within a narrowly circumscribed area as opposed to the vast reach of Grimgalad's enchantment.

The runic network that encompasses Grimgalad was laid down by the Dwarven geomancers over a millennium ago. Harnessing both the latent etheric energies of the land and the formidable force of their stonecraft, these geomancers erected a network of unseen power that has withstood the tests of time.

At the inception of this grand undertaking, the city of Grimgalad was just beginning to burgeon, and its founders foresaw the need for a stable environment to ensure the flourishing of their emerging society, especially given their interactions with trading partners across the variable climates of the Eldrahn continent.

Thus, these master rune-smiths and geomancers from the Dwarven conclaves chiseled and enchanted the foundational stones, burying them deep within the earth. The ether infused in the symbols interacts with the weave of the land itself, perpetuating a season in perpetuity—the rich, harvest-rich autumnal state that Grimgalad is renowned for.

Through the course of the millennia, this runic network has likely been maintained and re-energized by successive generations of geomancers, ensuring its continued efficacy and adapting the network to the evolving needs of Grimgalad as it grew into the sprawling trade center it is today, open to all species and cultures of Eldrahn.

These minified climates, like the persistent autumn around Grimgalad, would be akin to microcosms, little pockets of bespoke weather entirely separate from the larger biome. The delicate work would require remarkable precision, as the balance of energies must be tightly controlled to prevent etheric bleed or environmental stress. With the correct placement, attunement, and power source (like a ley line or a crafted ether battery), constructing such dedicated runic fields is certainly within the scope of geomantic expertise. Their uses could range from experimental ecosystems to sanctuaries that preserve rare flora and fauna, manifesting beautiful, ever-autumnal orchards amidst a disparate climate.

History

The history of Grimgalad is one of resilience and determination. Founded by a pioneering miner who wanted the simplicities of village life near where he worked, the lazy village that once blocked the pass through the Iron Mountains quickly grew into a large, the city has repelled numerous invasions and has maintained its sovereignty through shrewd diplomacy and military might.

A History of Grimgalad:

10,000 Years ago

The mining village we now know as Grimgalad was started by ancient Alfarii, who at this point in history, were already a separate species from Eldarii though still spoke a similar enough language (like Swedish and Norwegian) that they were doing major trade with them at the time.

8,000 Years ago

The mining village is prospering and could even be considered a small city at this point. The first defenses against the forest around it are raised, as they are no longer just on the mountain slopes.

7500-6000 Years ago

The first wars of Grimgalad started. The Alfarii have already mined out the upper portions of the Iron Mountain for several miles, and powerful Alfarii Ether-Weavers discover Ether-Shaping for the first time in Grimgalad, crafting gigantic automata to strip away the very tops of the mountain they've mined to expand the city on a large plateau that they shaped in tandem with their machines. The war is what results in the name change to Grimgalad, as well as its reputation for a Alfarii stronghold that creates advanced works of artifice.
